Later Working Life and Retirement

This section of the web site explains the University's policies and practices in relation to later working life and retirement.

From 1st October 2011 the University will not be enforcing a retirement age for the vast majority of its staff. This follows the Government’s ending of the UK default retirement age (which had been set at 65), and means staff can retire at an age and time of their choosing.

This presents a significant culture change for the University. As an employer, we cannot make assumptions about when staff will retire.   For staff, it will mean making decisions about their later working life and retirement plans. Some staff may chose to work beyond what was once considered 'retirement age'.
